Onboarding Case Study


"User Onboarding is the process of introducing the product to the users and assisting them to the point where they will become loyal customers."
“It is everything from the first visit to becoming a happy customer.”

Goal

Design an onboarding/Signup screen for a hotel booking app (Web and Mobile versions)

Target Group

Millennials (age 25-40) from India and USA.

Research

According to app retention data shared by Andrew Chen, the average app loses 77% of its daily active users (DAUs) within the first three days after the installation. Within 30 days, that figure rises to 90%. After 90 days, over 95% of DAUs are lost or less than 5% are kept engaged.

It is important to convert users in the initial phase and ensure they are retained.

I did a brief research on user onboarding (esp. for travel/hotel booking apps)

Principles of User Onboarding
1. Stress the user’s needs.
2. Provide brief, engaging guidance.
3. Inspire users to set goals.
4. Train users to improve their performance.
5. Encourage users to go beyond first-time use.

Techniques for Effective Onboarding
Always try to understand your users and their context before planning an onboarding sequence.
1. Prioritise your product’s value proposition.
2. Provide only mandatory information.
3. Provide a compact onboarding experience.
4. Create a concise, simple sign-up process.
5. Request the user’s permission.
6. Provide a preview of the app’s content.
7. Provide visual hints for guidance.
8. Promote personalization.

People travel and book hotels for casual and official purposes and the requirements vary with purpose. The idea here is to create an onboarding experience for a hotel booking app UNWIND where users can book hotels based on location, amenities, budget, schedule, purpose, safety, and user rating.

Closing Note

Every design challenge is a new lesson. User onboarding best practices are highly dependent on who the new user is—their motivations and pains—and a product’s ability to satisfy that new user’s desire. Unwind has been designed to keep the user front and center. 

This is just the first step and can be worked upon to deliver a great solution for hotel booking.
